Dana is at home on hospice. DeJay has motions scheduled for hearing in
June in front of F A Gosset in Omaha.
- There is a long history of Monson family medical woes.
- DeEtte Monson (DeJays mother) was ill from DeJays birth and died when DeJay was
20 years old.
- DeEttes illness caused Floyd to shoulder all child-rearing and farm tending responsibilities. Her
20 years of constant illness that included proferia and seizure disorder along with
4 major surgerys the 2nd of which took her stomach and eventual mercifical
death. The attendant medical bills drained the family finances, resulting in loss
of the family farm property that Floyd Monson, DeJay's father struggled to keep
afloat.
- DeJay and his sister were involved in a school bus accident in 1984. The
sister suffered a ruptured spleen; DeJay a blow to the head from which followed
headaches, which escalated into migraines and seizure activity. DeJay
had suffered numerous severe headaches and two strokes after the incident and while
under the care of a general practitioner as well as a neurologist.
- Over the course of the disease he has taken at least 19 different prescription drugs,
none of which were completely helpful and many of which were utterly devastating,
resulting in his total disability and in his needing to receive SSI payments.
- In 2000, his neurologist suggested cannabis as a dosage to prolong his life and
to alleviate some of his symptoms. Since implementing her suggestion,
he has remained virtually migraine and seizure free.
- In 2007 (November) Dana, his wife, was told of a benign mass in her chest cavity
and she researched a naturopathic approach to reduce the tumor. She adhered
to a protocol designed by------in Colorado springs that relied on detoxification
through juice fasting and establishing a vegan diet. She stayed with
the plan from February 08 through July 08, but the next biopsy revealed a malignant
mass and surgery was recommended because chemo and radiation were ruled out at that
time.
- Bill and Angie Compton, the Monsons closest friends, arrange for a benefit to be
held in JULY??? for the Monsons, which took place in Euhler, Nebraska and included
a spaghetti feed and silent auction.
- In August 2008, Dana undergoes surgery. 18 pounds of tumor and fluids
are removed from her chest cavity, taken from the front of the body and through
a large incision.
- The Monson family continues to suffer financially. Dana and DeJay are
partners in their small town salvage business and her cancer prevents her from working. DeJay
shoulders most of their shared responsibilities.
- DeJay falls victim to a drug-dealing police informant, which leads to police discovering
his pharmacy. DeJays insistence on his medical necessity falls on deaf
ears.
- Police threaten DeJay and Dana with forceful removal of the children by the State,
and with double prosecution. During an all-night search process that
failed to turn up substantial amounts of cash or other contraband and revealed the
truth of DeJays medical claim, the police in fact, did cut down feral hemp growing
on the Monson land to add to what DeJay had showed them. The amount the
police reported qualified the case for federal jurisdiction.
- While in jail at the time of the arrest, DeJay experiences his first seizure since
self-medicating.
- Floyd Monson went to his bank to get money to bail his son out of jail. The
arresting officer, confiscated the money on the premise that it was drug-contaminated,
delaying DeJays release and adding to his suffering.
- As a condition of his release, DeJay is refrained from using his medicine and forced
to resume pharmaceuticals. He had to revert to receiving SSI payments,
because of the debilitating affects of the prescribed drugs. He is restricted
from contact with his best friend, Bill Compton, who was in the Monson home at the
time of the police raid.
- Danas condition continues to plague her and disrupt child-rearing and home-schooling
routines. On December 10th a second surgery is performed, this time
8 pounds of tumor and fluids are removed from an incision on her back.
- In early spring 2009, her doctors recommend a last ditch effort and begin chemotherapy
and radiation treatments; again, to no avail. Treatments suspended and
Dana notices some improvement, which she attributes to stopping radiation treatment.
- Dana is presently under Hospice care.
- Dana spent Mothers Day with her children, husband and other family at their farmstead
in Craig. She was alert and in good spirits and insisted on the traditional
breakfast-in-bed being served while she was seated and upright on the couch in the
parlor.
